BlackBerry 10 Port-A-Thon

BlackBerry 10 Port-A-Thon

Mobile app development isn’t a two-horse town anymore. Any serious mobile app developer has to take into consideration every marketplace that mobile users are using today. This is an exciting month, as on January 30th the curtain will finally be pulled back on the new BlackBerry 10 family of devices. In anticipation of this, RIM is holding a series of Port-A-Thons to encourage app developers to port their applications over to the BlackBerry 10 system, and The Salt Mines is proud to take part in this final event before the big reveal.

Join us at The Salt Mines this Friday from noon to 6pm, and Saturday from 11am to 5pm as we work through updating apps for this new platform. RIM will have BlackBerry 10 experts and specialists available online to help with specific questions, and they’ve even been kind enough to donate a few BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha B devices and Playbook tablets to the Device Lab to make sure your apps will look their best on the final production devices.

If you need a little more convincing, RIM is sweeting the pot with the promise of $100 for every ported app submitted and accepted during this 36 hour period, up to a possible per-developer total of $2,000! We’ll be stocked up with soda and snacks, as well as pizza from Hound Dogs on Saturday, so join us in checking out this new era of BlackBerry.

Now that we’ve talked you into it, let’s go over a few details you’ll need to prepare. To make sure you’re able to submit your apps during this special 36-hour window, be sure to do the following as soon as possible:

  1. Register as a BlackBerry World Vendor. This is completely free, but does require a day or two to get approved, so the sooner you start this the better.
  2. Request your signature keys. Again, be sure to do this in advance of this weekend.
  3. Check out the BlackBerry developer tools and plug-ins. RIM is really going out of their way to make porting and writing new apps as simple as possible to make sure you’re familiar with the options.
  4. Finally, be sure to register for the Last Chance Port-A-Thon to make sure your apps are eligible for the $100-per-app reward.

Read more about the official details from BlackBerry, and be sure to check out the promotion’s terms and conditions. If you have any questions about the registration process, drop us a comment below or send us an email. If you need some help getting your BlackBerry World Vendor account expedited, we may also be able to help with that.

We’re excited about checking this all out this weekend, and look forward to meeting a lot of local app developers. See you this weekend!

Update: Thanks to everyone who came out for an amazing event! We were able to submit 13 apps to BlackBerry in the 36 hour window, including seven App Generator apps, two Android ports, two Cordova app ports, and two WebWorks ports. BlackBerry has issued an update on the rewards from this program, which you can read here. The short version is that once each app has been approved, you should expect to hear from BlackBerry about your reward the following Tuesday.

Thanks again to everyone for an awesome event, looking forward to more of these in the future!
